King Abdulaziz University was founded in 1967 in Jeddah. A private institution when it was created and named after the founder of Saudi Arabia, the university became public in 1974.

Its objective is to contribute to the spread of higher education in the western part of Saudi Arabia; as such, it occupies a central place within the country’s higher education institutions. In 2017, the university had 31,000 students, 21% of whom were international.
