The Head of Basketball Development is responsible for overseeing NBA Africa’s basketball youth development programs, with a focus on grassroots initiatives, elite player development, and social responsibility initiatives across the continent. Reporting to the Chief Operations Officer, this role ensures that basketball development efforts align with NBA Africa’s operational strategies to grow the sport, increase fan engagement, and develop pathways for young talent.
The Head of Basketball Development will work closely with local and international development partners, corporations, federations, schools, and communities to expand programs, enhance youth basketball infrastructure, and ensure a high standard of training and development across Africa.
Major Responsibilities
- Program Leadership: Oversee the planning, management, and execution of basketball development programs, covering grassroots development, elite talent development, and social responsibility (SRPP) programs
- Grassroots Development: Drive engagement and participation in grassroots programs, including Jr. NBA leagues, clinics, and NBA Basketball Schools, to promote youth involvement in basketball across Africa
- Talent Identification and Elite Development: Lead and implement NBA Academy and elite basketball programs, working to scout, track, and develop high-potential players, while fostering opportunities for growth and exposure through camps, tournaments, and training
- Social Responsibility Projects (SRPP): Lead SRPP initiatives, using basketball to create positive social impact
- Fundraising and Budget Management: Oversee budgets for basketball development programs, including securing additional funds for expansion where needed
- Infrastructure Development: Oversee basketball infrastructure projects, such as court builds, ensuring quality standards, strategic location selection, and alignment with community needs
- NCAA Compliance & Athlete Development: Manage processes related to NCAA compliance for players in the NBA Academy, including document collection (e.g., transcripts, test scores), eligibility guidance, and maintaining relationships with college and professional coaches and scouts
- Collaboration: Engage with internal teams and external partners, including regional federations, schools, government bodies, and sponsors, to drive program success and align with NBA Africa’s mission
- Monitoring & Reporting: Regularly report on program outcomes, leveraging data to track impact, support continuous improvement, and align initiatives with NBA Africa’s strategic objectives
Required Skills/Knowledge
- Basketball Operations Expertise: Deep understanding of basketball development, from grassroots programming to elite player training, including knowledge of the local African and global basketball landscape
- NCAA & Compliance Knowledge: Familiarity with NCAA eligibility requirements, recruitment processes, and the ability to support players in meeting compliance standards for college recruitment
- Project Management: Expertise in managing multiple ongoing large-scale projects, with a focus on delivering results within budget and on schedule
- Cross-Cultural Awareness: Strong familiarity with the African basketball landscape and the ability to operate effectively across different cultural contexts. Fluency in English required, French a plus.
- Results-driven: Proven ability to work with cross-functional teams, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines. Willingness to travel extensively across Africa
- Strategic Thinking: Ability to navigate complex and ambiguous environments, developing clear strategies to drive growth and community impact through basketball
- Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of engaging effectively with diverse stakeholders
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including PowerPoint, Excel, Word, and Outlook, and ability to learn new computer programs
- Basketball Knowledge & Passion: Deep passion for basketball with a focus on youth development, in depth knowledge of the game of basketball, including rules and regulations, officiating, scheduling, players, coaches, and teams.
Experience Needed
- 10+ years of experience in basketball operations, sports development, or youth programming, with a focus on international or multicultural environments
- Demonstrated experience in managing partnerships with development bodies, corporations, federations, schools, and community organizations
- Proven track record in overseeing development programs, including grassroots initiatives, elite talent identification, and social responsibility projects
- Prior coaching, playing, or team administration experience is preferred
Educational Background Required
- Bachelor’s degree required preferably in Sports Management, Business, or a related field
- Advanced degree preferred
